As we edge closer to December and the start of a brand-new year, you’ll no doubt be thinking about what you want your business to achieve in 2025.
It’s also important to think about any external factors that might affect how you do business in the months ahead.
We’ve put together a list of energy legislation changes that may affect you next year and how you can get ahead of any potential deadlines.
Scope 3 Emissions Reporting: January 2025
Large European businesses need to start reporting on Scope 3 emissions from 2025 under the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive. Scope 3 emissions cover all the indirect emissions a business is responsible for, including transportation, distribution, and employee commuting.
As we’re no longer part of the EU, this change will not directly affect UK businesses. However, if you’re part of an EU company’s supply chain, you may need to report on your emissions as part of their processes.
If you’re asked to comply, energy monitoring software can help you report your carbon footprint.

ESOS Phase 3 Action Plan: March 2025
The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) is an energy assessment scheme for large businesses that employ over 250 people or have an annual turnover of over £44 million.
Under phase 3 of the ESOS scheme, these businesses must submit an action plan advising how they intend to reduce energy consumption and how they will do it. A board-level director must sign off on this plan, and it will be published publicly.
The deadline for this was originally December 2024, but the Environment Agency has advised that it will accept action plans until the 5th of March.
If you’re not sure where to start with an ESOS Phase 3, we can help you compile a report or put you in touch with an ESOS assessor to help you audit your site.
Workplace Charging Scheme Grant: March 2025
The Workplace Charging Scheme Grant, which provides support towards the costs of the purchase and installation of EV charging points for businesses, will end on the 31st of March.
Under the grant you can claim up to 75% of the total cost of installation, or £350 per socket, whichever is lower. You can claim for 40 sockets across all sites.
The Market-Wide Half-Hourly Settlement: April 2025
From April 2025, all electric meters across the UK (both domestic and commercial) will move to half-hourly readings. This may mean you need to switch to a new meter.
Your energy supplier will arrange an upgrade, meaning you don’t have to do anything. If you don’t want to wait, or you want to move to a specific type of meter, like an Automated Meter Reading (AMR) meter, we can help.

Other Legislation to be Aware of
The UK Government will discuss additional legislation and bills in 2025. However at this moment in time, nobody is 100% sure how these will affect businesses.
For example, The Great British Energy Bill, introduced to Parliament shortly after the 2024 election, will potentially impact the investment of, and development in, clean energy.
It’s essential to keep up to date with energy regulations and market trends so you can take proactive steps to keep your bills low and take advantage of renewable technologies.
We regularly post about the latest changes to the industry on our blog and in our monthly newsletter, so you’re always in the loop.
